Nadine Engel Sherman

Nadine Engel Sherman is a fifteen year old freshman at Northwest PA Collegiate Academy in Erie where she plays cello in the orchestra and piano in a jazz ensemble. Nadine has always studied music at home with her mother, Emilie Engel. Her older sister Julia remains her exemplary musical mentor and comrade. Making music together has been a life long labor of love.

Nadine attends music institutes and camps during the summers where she receives stimulating experience and instruction in solo, chamber and orchestral performances on cello. Particularly influential were Nancy Hair from Boston, Nick Diodore of Cleveland, Elizabeth Elliott of Pittsburgh, Ann Rule from Denver and Jonathan Gdove from Buffalo.

In 2002, Nadine was a winner in the International Suzuki Young Artists String Competition. That eventful experience in Minneapolis shaped Nadine’s destiny as a cellist. The same year, she won the junior division of the Erie Music Teachers Association Competition. In 2003 she won the Young Artists Cello Competition in Columbus, Ohio at Capital University. In 2004, Nadine became principal cellist for the Erie Junior Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Robert Dolwick and in 2005, she won the intermediate division of the EMTA competition.

In 2006, Nadine won her audition to perform in the Cleveland Youth Orchestra under the direction of Jayce Ogren. She rehearses and performs with the orchestra in the magnificent Severance Hall. 2007 brings her great honor as winner of the Erie Junior Philharmonic Concerto Competition playing the Elgar Cello concerto.

Musical theatre at Mercyhurst Prep and the Erie Playhouse with Art Martone and Andrew Rainbow’s pit orchestras broadened Nadine’s familiarity with the popular music genre. Nadine studies dance and acrobatics and is a member of her high school swim team.

Nadine’s aspiration is to attend a world class music school and develop a career as a cellist.
